    Code Geass: An anime set in a parallel earth (for example, North America is ruled by the Britannian Empire, but England itself was lost in a war with Europe. Britannia recently conquered Japan, where the story is set) where the main character often start complex, elaborate plots to reach his goal.

    Tales of an Alternate Shogunate: The idea of changing the time period from a pseudo-near future to a pseudo-1853.

    Sounds promising?

    It isn't.

    In terms of new ideas, this manga had two. "Let's set this in the Meiji restoration period," and "Let's make the Britannian Emperor from the series into Commodore Perry." (Admiral in the manga)

    And I'm still not sure if the second is supposed to be a swipe at Perry or just poor writing.

    There's not a single clever plan in this one-volume manga, none of the depth or cleverness the Code Geass series is known for, and while in some respects it's turned up the lightheartedness, it doesn't... Read more
